Alex Teles

Alex Pereira Teles, known as TELES, is the third generation of a family that has shaped the history of Brazilian folk art. He is the grandson of Geraldo Teles de Oliveira (GTO), one of the country’s most important wood sculptors, and the son of master Mario Pereira Teles (MARIO TELES). Alex grew up immersed in the woodcarving tradition initiated by his grandfather, inspired by vivid dreams. Blending academic studies in Communication, Sociology, and Philosophy with his family heritage, he creates unique works that explore spirituality, popular culture, and Brazilian ancestry.
His sculptures are hand-carved with chisels and knives, preserving the primitive technique developed by GTO, marked by schematic human figures, geometric symbols, and openwork pieces reminiscent of mandalas and the “wheel of life.” However, Alex introduces softer, more anatomical forms, addressing themes such as Congado, folk celebrations, and popular religiosity. In addition to his artistic production, he directs the GTO Residence Museum in Divinópolis and coordinates art education projects that have reached around 60,000 children. He is currently dedicated to bringing his story to institutions that support autistic children and those with Down syndrome.
Nationally and internationally acclaimed, Alex Teles received the Sebrae Top 100 Traditional Handcraft Award, standing out among more than 1,200 Brazilian artisans. At the last G20 meeting, his work was chosen to represent Brazilian folk art. His pieces are found in collections and exhibitions in over 190 countries, perpetuating the legacy of the Teles Family and reaffirming wood as a living medium to engrave Brazil’s memory and cultural identity.
He was awarded the Sebrae Top100 prize for his mandala "The Wheel of Time".
