Mário Teles

Mario Teles, born in Divinópolis, Minas Gerais, i, is a self-taught sculptor and son of the renowned artist Geraldo Teles de Oliveira (GTO). From an early age, he assisted his father in creating wooden sculptures, gradually developing his own technique. Recognized for preserving Minas Gerais naïve art, he was awarded the title of Master of Popular Culture by the Minas Gerais Government, standing out as an important guardian of cultural traditions. His studio, located in Divinópolis, also houses the Family Teles Museum, dedicated to preserving and exhibiting the artistic legacy of this family, fundamental to Brazilian popular art.

His technique involves sketching directly onto the wood, followed by carving with a pocketknife and gouge to create figures representing popular festivals such as congado and junina celebrations. Mario’s works are known for their symmetrical precision, rich detail, and their ability to convey the vibrancy of cultural traditions through the rhythmic succession of characters. The Family Teles Museum also preserves tools and historic pieces illustrating this artisanal technique, ensuring the continuity of this heritage.

Throughout his career, Mario Teles has received several awards and recognitions, including the “Orgulho Divinopolitano” title in 2022 granted by the local City Hall. His sculptures have been exhibited in important shows in Brazil and abroad, in countries such as Belgium, the United States, Japan, and Germany. The Family Teles Museum is today a vital cultural space for strengthening and promoting Minas Gerais and Brazilian naïve art.
