Marcos de Sertânia

Master Marcos de Sertânia is one of the most important wood sculptors from the Sertão of Pernambuco. Born in 1974, he began his artistic journey at the age of 12, influenced by his grandfather and uncles, who were artisans. His technique is characterized by elongated, skeletal figures, such as the iconic dog Baleia, inspired by Graciliano Ramos' novel "Vidas Secas." These sculptures convey the anguish of the drought and the resilience of the Northeastern people.
Recognized as a master artisan by the Government of Pernambuco in 2011, Marcos shares his knowledge with the local community, forming a network of artisans who collaborate in his workshop. His works have been exhibited in fairs like Fenearte and the International Handicraft Salon, and are part of private collections in Brazil and abroad. One of his pieces was even presented to Pope Francis, symbolizing the global reach of his art.
His workshop is located at Rua Tenente José Pires, 364, Alto do Rio Branco, in Sertânia (PE), where he continues to create and inspire new generations. Marcos is considered a living treasure of Pernambuco's culture, bringing the art of the Sertão to the world.
