Raimundo Batista

Master Raimundo Batista de Oliveira, from Lagoa da Canoa, Alagoas, is a prominent Brazilian artisan known for his wood sculptures depicting the daily life of urban peripheral communities. His technique involves carving blocks of wood, such as cedar and umburana, to create vibrant representations of stacked, colorful houses, inspired by the hillside neighborhoods where he has lived. This style, known as "wooden favelas," has become his artistic signature;

Raimundo's journey is marked by migrations and resilience. After his father's death, he moved with his family to São Paulo, where he worked in a shoe factory and began sculpting small objects from discarded materials. Upon returning to Alagoas, he met artist Zezito Guedes, who encouraged him to pursue an artistic career. It was then that Raimundo started creating his wooden sculptures, expressing his unique perspective on urban favelas.

His work has gained national and international recognition, being exhibited in galleries in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Maceió. Additionally, his pieces have been showcased at the National Center for Folklore and Popular Culture in Rio de Janeiro. Currently, Raimundo continues to develop his art in his workshop located in Lagoa da Canoa, Alagoas, passing on his knowledge and passion for art to future generations.
